A Time of Thanksgiving

Though only one day is really involved, Thanksgiving Day makes November a month of thanksgiving. In the crowd I hang out with, the cry “Happy Turkey Day!” elicits feelings of thanksgiving, as well as, anticipation of a splendid repast awaiting everyone as we sit down with family and/or friends to share a sumptuous meal. It is a meal in which each of us, except the kids, swears we will not over indulge. Everyone, including the kids, knows we are lying. No one seems to care. The joy that accompanies thanksgiving is worth both acknowledgement and expression.

Given today’s global financial situation and our uncertainty about the future, we might be tempted this year to mute our celebrations. I encourage you to celebrate to the fullest! It might help to turn off the incessant TV coverage of national and world news for just a few minutes and look around you. The country is still here, the people you love and who love you still know you well enough to know you will overeat. The American dream may be a little worn and tarnished, but the American people still dream. Their ingenuity is still here waiting to be used.

I think our wealth has always been in our people. We still have them and I think most of them are still dreaming. We have young ones growing up who are much smarted than I am.

You know, I may not have as much money this year as I did last year, but I still have wealth. We still have each other, “we the people”. Happy Turkey Day!
