Pastor’s Message for May

ARBOR DAY

Last weekend, the village of Cazenovia added a new tree to its plethora of stunningly beautiful trees.  We have trees of all sorts: deciduous, evergreens, flowering, scented, old and young, trees that excite and delight our senses and turn spring days into a virtual kaleidoscope of color and scents. This new tree, however, in addition to adding its evergreen beauty to all the others, will have a very special function.  In years to come, this tree will grow tall and in time come to symbolize the Christmas Season for many generations of Cazenovians to come.

Looking at our current Christmas tree, standing in front of the manse, still holding its now unlit lights, I wonder about the past it has seen.  I imagine the children that have played around its base, the parades that have marched past, the nights it has stood as a sentential in this park in the midst of the village.  Maybe it chuckled and waved its branches at the guy who climbed the rope to paint the steeple.  Maybe it was amused by the comments of   others who stood watching.  How many Christmas celebrations do you suppose it has witnessed?  How many lovers do you suppose sat in its shadow and chatted with each other?

This Arbor Day, the past and the future come together here on the corner of Albany and Sullivan Streets.  We will rightly celebrate and honor the past upon which the village has been built and we will look to the future with hope and anticipation of continuing growth.  This sounds like Arbor Day and also Christmas, don’t you think?

Easter Reality

Easter is a quiet, reflective time for me. Outside the flurry of the season’s special worship opportunities and celebrations, my mind and heart strive to “just be still” and ponder the reality of the object of our worship, the resurrection, as well as its meaning to human beings such as us.

“Reality” may seem an inappropriate word in referring to events of faith such as Lent and Easter. “Reality” TV in our day and time would have us believe in factual, intense, winning at all cost, self-centeredness. This is their “reality”. This is their norm. By their standards, it should be ours as well and people strive to be winners like all those other winners they see from business to sports to entertainment. Easter presents a different “reality”.

This God of ours is not in the business of beating us. Winning is the last thing on his mind, if there at all. This God of the cross is willing to loose everything, even life, to demonstrate his love for us and his desire to be in relationship with us. This God is willing to serve us, not force us into serving.

Scripture tells us that our strength lies in our weakness. The Christ demonstrates this reality as he arises from the failure of the tomb to the glory of life; bringing you and me along with him. No competition here. No self’-centeredness here. But Oh the intensity of God’s love and power.

Happy Easter, Steve

Easter Sunday Service

A Celebration of the Resurrection with Trumpets, Anthems, and Sermon

First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia will offer a celebration service of Easter at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, April 4th.  Easter is the most joyful time of the church year. celebrated against the background of the shadows and darkness of Lent and Holy Week, this season truly becomes a living expression of the hope that God has brought into the world through the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Probably the most traditional way of celebrating Easter is through special music and song.  At the First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia, Music Director Catharine Wheat has planned a program of special music.  The Prelude will be “Baroque Alleluia” by Bach and “Rejoicing” by Handel with  trumpet and organ.

The Introit will be “Jubilate Deo” sung by all three choirs of the church from all parts of the sanctuary and accompanied by handbells..  The Senior Choir will sing “Alleluia Christ Is Risen” by Patrick M. Liebergen accompanied by the trumpet and a chorus from Bach’s Cantata No.15 “Be Joyful Together” arranged by Hal H. Hopson

The center of the service will be the sermon by The Reverend Dr. Steven R. Thomas Jr., “Be Glad and Rejoice Forever.”

The Postlude will be “Allegro and Finale by Vivaldi with organ and trumpet.

If you are looking for an open and friendly place to celebrate Easter, Pastor Thomas invites you to worship at the First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia.  Child Care and Sunday School are available during the service.  For more information contact the church at 655-3191

Palm Sunday Service of Celebration

The First Presbyterian Church in Cazenovia will celebrate a Palm Sunday worship service at 10:00 a.m. on March 28th.

Catharine Wheat, Director of Music, has planned a significant service of music. The organ prelude will be “Allegro Con Brio” from Sonata IV by Mendelssohn. There will be special music from the Sounds of Chimes Hand Bell Choir as well as music from all the vocal choirs of the church. The Senior Choir will sing the anthem “The Palms” by Faure.

The Reverend Dr. Steven R. Thomas, Jr. will deliver the sermon entitled “The Lord God Helps Me!”

The children from the Sunday School will distribute Palms.
Palm Sunday, also known as Passion Sunday, is the Sunday before Easter. Palm Sunday remembers Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem near the end his public ministry. When Jesus entered the city with his entourage, people laid palm branches in the road before him and greeted him as the long awaited Messiah. They shouted “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord.”

After the Palm Sunday service there will be a gourmet brunch at 11:30 a.m. in the church’s Meeting House. The brunch will honor the new people joining the church, but the event is free and open to anyone wanting good food and good fellowship.

If you are looking for an open and friendly place to celebrate Palm Sunday, Pastor Thomas invites you to worship at the First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia. Child Care and Sunday School are available during the service. For more information contact the church at 655-3191 or visit our website at www.cazpres.org.
